Woman’s Newsboy Slouchy

Items required
5mm (H) hook
Chic Cotton Yarn – Darling Mulberry available worldwide from Xena Knits
Stitch marker
Wool needle
2.5cm Buttons

Guidelines
Mark the start of each round and then move marker as a round is completed.
HK – hook CH – chain SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
HDC Inc – Half double crochet Increase.  Increase by placing 2 hdc in 1 stitch.
HDC Dec – Half double crochet decrease.  Yarn over hook, through 1st stitch, yarn over hook through, yarn over hook, through next stitch, yarn over hook pull through.  Yarn over hook and pull through all the loops.
FPHDC - Front Post Half Double Crochet
** - repeat the stitches within

In rounds 2-12 You increase by placing a hdc and a fphdc into the stitch
Rounds 13 onwards only place a fphdc in the stitch, do not place a hdc as well.
Gauge
8 sts & 7 rows = 2”
If your hat is coming out too big go down one hook size and vice versa if it’s too small.
Approximate Size
Approximatly 23” around which will fit most ladies.

HAT
Using 5mm (H) hook and  Chic yarn.
Ch 3 (or use magic circle)
Round 1) 8 hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook, ss to join to 1st hdc (8)
Round 2) Ch  2 (counts as 1st hdc), 1 fphdc, * 1 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to join to top of ch 2 (16)
Round 3) Ch 2, 1 hdc, 1 fphdc, *2 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of ch 2 to join (24)
Round 4) Ch 2, 2 hdc, 1 fphdc, *3 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of ch 2 to join (32)
Round 5) Ch 2, 3 hdc, 1 fphdc, *4 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of ch 2 to join (40)
Round 6) Ch 2, 4 hdc, 1 fphdc, *5 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of ch 2 to join (48)
Round 7) Ch 2, 5 hdc, 1 fphdc, *6 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of ch 2 to join (56)
Round 8) Ch 2, 6 hdc, 1 fphdc, *7 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of ch 2 to join (64)
Round 9) Ch 2, 7 hdc, 1 fphdc, *8 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of ch 2 to join (72)
Round 10) Ch 2, 8 hdc, 1 fphdc, *9 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of ch 2 to join (80)
Round 11) Ch 2, 9 hdc, 1 fphdc, *10 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of ch 2 to join (88)
Round 12) Ch 2, 10 hdc, 1 fphdc, *11 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of ch 2 to join (96)
Round 13 – 19) Ch 2, 10 hdc, 1 fphdc, * 11 hdc, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of ch 2 to join (96) Remember you are not increases on these rows.
             
Round 20) Ch 2, 8 hdc, 1 hdc dec, 1 fphdc, *9 hdc, 1 hdc dec, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of Ch  to join (88)
Round 21) Ch 2, 7 hdc, 1 hdc dec, 1 fphdc, *8 hdc, 1 hdc dec, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of Ch  to join (80)
Round 22) Ch 2, 6 hdc, 1 hdc dec, 1 fphdc, *7 hdc, 1 hdc dec, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of Ch  to join (72)
Round 23) Ch 2, 5 hdc, 1 hdc dec, 1 fphdc, *6 hdc, 1 hdc dec, 1 fphdc* x 7, ss to top of Ch  to join (64)
Round 24 – 27) Ch 1 (does not count as stitch), 1 sc in same stitch as join, 63 sc, ss to top of 1st sc to join (64)
   (just carry on if you want the brim. If you don’t finish here).

Brim (optional)
Row 28) In front loops only, ch 1, 1 sc in same st as join, 21 sc, ch 1, turn (22)
Row 29) In both loops from now on 22 sc, ch 1, turn (22)
Row 30) 1 ss, 20 sc, 1 ss, turn (22)
Row 31) Miss 1 ss, 1 ss, 18 sc, 1 ss, turn (20)
Row 32) Miss 1 ss, sc along the row, down the side of the brim and around the hat, sc along the edge of the brim and ss to 1st sc to finish.

 
   
Band (optional)
Ch 25
Round 1) 1 sc in 2nd ch from hk, 22 sc, 3 sc in last ch, 22 sc down the otherside of the starting chain, 2 sc in last ch, join with a ss to the 1st sc (50)
Round 2) ch 1, 2 sc in same st, 22 sc, 3 sc inc, 22 sc, 2 sc inc, join with ss to the 1st sc, finish (56) (leave enough yarn to attach to the hat)
Attach the brim to the hat. Attach it above the brim. Attach the buttons.
