#Sock #Monkey #Earflap #Hat 1 yr+


The pattern is in US terms
Items required 
5mm (H) hook & 4mm hook.  If you don’t have a 4mm hook use a 4.25mm (G) hook instead.
Cream & Grey Aran, Purple Double knit (8ply)
Stitch marker
Wool needle
2 20mm Black Buttons

Guidelines
At the end of each round just carry on.
Mark the start of each round and then move marker as a round is completed.
HK - hook
CH - chain
SS – Slip Stitch
HDC – half double crochet
HDC Inc – Half double crochet Increase.  Increase by placing 2 hdc in 1 stitch.
HDC Dec – Half double crochet decrease.  Yarn over hook, through 1st stitch, yarn over hook through, hook through next stitch, yarn over hook pull through.  Yarn over hook and pull through all the loops.
RSC (sometimes called a crab stitch) – To do a reverse sc put the hook though the previous stitch, yarn around, pull through and yarn through the two stitches.  Then do the same in the next previous stitch. (this part is optional)
Gauge
7 sts & 6 rows = 2”
If your hat is coming out too big go down one hook size and vice versa if it’s too small.

BASIC HAT
Using 5mm (H) hook and cream, purple & grey yarn.
Using Cream Yarn
Ch 2 (or use magic circle)
Round 1) 6 hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook (6)
Round 2) 6 hdc inc (12)
Round 3) *1 hdc, hdc inc* x 6 (18)
Round 4) *2 hdc, hdc inc* x 6 (24)
Round 5) *3 hdc, hdc inc* x 6 (30)
Round 6) *4 hdc, hdc inc* x 6 (36)
Round 7) *5 hdc, hdc inc* x 6 (42)
Round 8) *6 hdc, hdc inc* x 6 (48), 2 ss
Change to Purple yarn
Round 9) Ch 2, 6 hdc, 1 hdc inc, *7 hdc, hdc inc * x 5 (54), ss to join to top of ch
Change to Grey yarn
Round 10) *8 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (60) (1 -3 yrs go to round  13)
Round 11) *9hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (66) (3 – 10yrs go to row 13)
Round 12) *10 hdc, 1 hdc inc* x 6 (72)
Round 13) hdc around (66) (1 – 3 yrs 60, 3 – 10 yrs 66, 10 yrs+ 72)
You need another 13 rounds for each of the sizes.
(total quantity of rounds  1 – 3 yrs 24, 3 – 10 yrs 25, 10 yrs+ 26)
When you have finished the above slip stitch x 2 (don’t finish carry on with the first earflap)

1 – 3 yrs old 1st Ear Flap 
Row 1) Ch 2, 10 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 2 - 3) 10 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 4) 1 hdc dec, 6hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 5) 1 hdc dec, 4 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 6) 1 hdc dec, 2 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 7) 1 hdc dec, 1 hdc dec, finish.
1 – 3 yrs old 2nd Ear Flap
Count 20 from the back of the ear flap you have just finished and join.
Row 1) Ch 2, 10 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 2 - 3) 10 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 4) 1 hdc dec, 6hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 5) 1 hdc dec, 4 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn

Row 7) 1 hdc dec, 1 hdc dec, finish.

3 - 10 yrs old 1st Ear Flap
Row 1) Ch 2, 12 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 2 - 3) 12 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 4) 1 hdc dec, 8 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 5) 1 hdc dec, 6hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 6) 1 hdc dec, 4 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn

10 yrs+ 1st Ear Flap
Row 1) Ch 2, 14 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 2 - 3) 14 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 4) 1 hdc dec, 10 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 5) 1 hdc dec, 8 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 6) 1 hdc dec, 6hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 7) 1 hdc dec, 4 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn

10 yrs+ 2nd Ear Flap
Count 22 from the back of the ear flap you have just finished and join.
Row 1) Ch 2, 14 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 2 - 3) 14 hdc, ch 2, turn
Row 4) 1 hdc dec, 10 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 5) 1 hdc dec, 8 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 6) 1 hdc dec, 6hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 7) 1 hdc dec, 4 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 8) 1 hdc dec, 2 hdc, 1 hdc dec, ch 2, turn
Row 9) 1 hdc dec, 1 hdc dec, finish.

Edging
5mm (H) hook & Purple yarn.
Last round) reverse sc around and join with slip stitch (to do an rsc put the hook though the previous stitch yarn around, pull through and yarn through the two stitches.  Then do the same in the next previous stitch (optional).

Ears x 2
Grey yarn and 5mm (H) hook
Ch 2
Row 1) 6 hdc in 2nd ch from hk, ch 2, turn
Row 2) 6 hdc inc, ch 2, turn
Row 3) 12 hdc, finish (leave enough yarn to attach to hat)

















Mouth
Cream yarn & 5mm hook
Ch 16
Row 1) 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 12 hdc, 3 hdc in end ch, 12 hdc down the other side. 2 hdc in end ch
Row 2) 12 hdc, 2 hdc inc, 14 hdc, 2 hdc inc, 2 ss, finish (leave enough yarn to attach to hat)









Smile
Purple yarn and 4mm hook
Ch 12 and attach to hat.
Or you can create the mouth using the below method
To make the mouth you put your hook from front to back and pull a loop of yarn through.  You then move to the next hole and put the hook from front to back and pull a loop through the hat and the loop you have on the hook.
     
Carry on till you make the shape of a mouth.
